What a “top university” should really mean
Rankings measure different things: research, citations, reputation, internationalisation or aspects of support. A high overall position guarantees neither the most suitable programme nor the best learning experience for one person.
Start with the subject and preferred learning profile. Use rankings only afterwards as one data point among several.

Requirements, tests, deadlines and selection procedures.
Environment
Language, cost, support, city, size and learning culture.
Add two questions for each option: “What would I do there every day?” and “Which alternatives would I have after the first year?”

- Begin with the subject and collect 8–12 programmes.
- Remove programmes without suitable modules or realistic funding.
- Check official curricula, admission and cost.
- Add current student perspectives, open days or online sessions.
