Use the requirements for the correct assessment session.

General guidance and version-specific assessment information are kept separate so outdated criteria are not confused with current requirements.

Version control

The assessment session determines which rules apply.

Curricula, assessment criteria, forms and school procedures may be revised. Every summary therefore needs a visible statement of validity.

EEFrom May 2027

Revised Extended Essay

The revised EE model applies from first assessment in May 2027. Students must use the criteria, reflection requirements and subject guidance for the correct version.

Updated Mathematics courses

The revised Mathematics AA and AI courses are first assessed in May 2029. The mathematical exploration remains, but its criteria change.

Internal school deadlines may be earlier.The IB communicates submission dates to schools. Schools commonly set internal milestones and final deadlines that are decisive for personal planning.

The current exploration uses five criteria.

A: Presentation

Coherent, logically organised and concise structure.

B: Mathematical communication

Correct notation, terminology, diagrams, units and definitions.

C: Personal engagement

Independent choices and an exploration visibly shaped by the student.

D: Reflection

Evaluation of results, methods, assumptions, limitations and improvements.

E: Use of mathematics

Relevant, correct and appropriately sophisticated mathematics.

Mathematics IA from assessment 2029

Four criteria follow the mathematical inquiry process.

SL and HL use the same IA criteria in the revised model. Expectations for the mathematics itself still depend on the course and level.

A: Problem specification

Define the problem in context and the desired outcomes.

B: Abstraction

Justify assumptions, methods, tools and mathematical form.

C: Computation

Carry out calculations and mathematical communication correctly.

D: Interpretation

Interpret results, evaluate outcomes and refine the investigation.
